Full Power Barnraising – Save the Date!

This September, we team up with WGXC to hold our very first full power community radio barnraising! WGXC is a community-run media project, re-envisioning radio as an innovative platform for local participation by creating an interactive multi-media space for community members to produce inclusive programming and report about what's going on in Greene and Columbia Counties of the New York Hudson Valley.
On the last weekend in September, hundreds of people will converge in Hudson, NY for the weekend-long barnraising. We will share ideas, experiences, and skills in the launching of WGXC's 3,300-watt community radio station, 90.7-FM. Volunteers in Greene and Columbia counties are diligently working to get the station on air and are excited about the possibilities of their new community-run radio station. WGXC Volunteer Coordinator, Kaya Weidman affirms, “This station will be an incredible resource and contribution to our local area, our sense of place and one another, and most of all to each of our daily lives.” Registration will open in the next few months, so check out our website for future updates.
Media Ownership: What's Changed and What Hasn't
Prometheus will be in Tampa, Florida next week for an April 20 FCC workshop on media ownership. Brandy Doyle reports from Tampa on why the issue matters, and why you haven't heard much about it lately. (In Florida? Making Waves on the Road: Prometheus Tour Update
On March 16th, the Prometheus Radio Project and Palabra Radio set out on a cross-country tour called Making Waves: Transmitting Popular Power. Over past three weeks, we have facilitated nearly 20 workshops in English and Spanish with grassroots organizations interested in exploring radio as a tool for social justice organizing. We’re documenting the tour on our blog, uploading stories, interviews, photos and videos.
Just as our country is vast and diverse, so are the groups interested in starting community radio stations. In Dothan, Alabama we met with the Ordinary People Society, a group of formerly incarcerated people interested in using radio to empower their community. They see radio as a way to help people access crucial services including computer training, GED classes, computer literacy, and to regain their voter rights. In San Antonio, we met with Local 782, a musicians’ union who hope to use low power FM to broadcast local music.
Prometheus is Hiring a new Research and Technology VISTA!
Want to demystify media policy and help people gain a voice in FCC decisions? Prometheus is now accepting applications for a Research and Technology VISTA. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will work with Prometheus's Policy Director to survey the regulatory landscape of community radio and to develop tools to involve low power radio advocates in FCC decision making.
